**To AVOID PAYING PENALTIES ON TAXES**
  • Make sure that you receive bills for all property that you own. Check off the bills as you receive them and contact the Treasurer's Office at (434) 542-5125 or pberkeley@charlotteva.com if you are missing any bills.
  • Keep the Treasurer informed of any change in address so that future bills will be mailed to the correct address.
  • Mail your property tax payments early to make sure that the envelope is postmarked on or before the due date. According to Virginia Law, the Treasurer must review the USPS postmark date to determine if payment was mailed before the deadline.

Under Virginia State Law, it is the responsibility of the taxpayer

REAL ESTATE TAXES
Assessment Ratio:  100% Tax Rate: $0.53 / $100
Real estate taxes are assessed as of July 1st of each year. Taxes are billed twice annually with due dates of December 5th and June 5th and can be paid at the Treasurer's Office at 201 David Bruce Avenue in Charlotte Court House. Any payments not received by the due date will be charged a 10% penalty.  Interest is 10% annually and begins accruing immediately after the due date. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve taxpayers of the penalty and interest charge applied to all past due bills.

Real estate values are reassessed every six years by an outside agency in accordance with state law.  A real estate reassessment was recently completed and reassessed values took effect July 1, 2013.  If you have any questions regarding the amount of an assessment, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue, Naisha Pridgen Carter, at (434) 542-5546 or npridgen@charlotteva.com.

Real estate tax account balances can be reviewed at the county's new on-line tax portal.  An on-line tax payment option will be added to the portal soon!

Real personal property taxes are assessed as of July 1st of each year. Taxes are billed twice annually with due dates of December 5th and June 5th. Any payments not received by the due date will be charged a 10% penalty.  Interest is 10% annually and begins accruing immediately after the due date. When moving vehicles into or out of the county, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue within 30 days. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve taxpayers of the penalty and interest charge applied to all past due bills.

A passenger vehicle assessment may be reduced if the vehicle has high mileage.  The reduction is based on actual mileage.  To be considered for this deduction, tax payers must submit a  High Mileage Application for Passenger Vehicles along with the required documentation specified on the application prior to July 1st of each year.

If you have any questions regarding the amount of an assessment, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue, Naisha Pridgen Carter, at (434) 542-5546 or npridgen@charlotteva.com.
