DECLARATION OF A LOCAL EMERGENCY CORONAVIRUS 2019 (COVID-19)

The County of Charlotte has enacted a Declaration of Local Emergency in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  The local declaration is effective Monday, March 16, 2020 at 4:28 p.m. The declaration follows Governor Northam’s State Declaration of Emergency and President Trump’s National Emergency Declaration.  A local declaration allows the County of Charlotte to maximize preparedness and response efforts regarding COVID-19.  During this local emergency, Charlotte County will make every effort to provide uninterrupted essential services to our citizens.

We encourage our citizens to check the County website at www.charlotteva.com as we continue to share information about county facilities and services.  Additionally, we urge all residents to visit the following links for the latest information and public health guidance:

Charlotte County's Temporary Operational Changes to Protect Public Health

Effective May 29th individuals inside business and public facilities are required to wear a face covering or mask in accordance with Executive Order Sixty-Three and with the exceptions noted in the order. Exceptions include when eating and drinking, children under 10 (although  children over 3 are encouraged to wear them) and those with certain medical exemptions.

Enforcement will be through the health department rather than law enforcement as failure to wear a mask will not be considered a criminal activity. The Governor noted that this is about safety, protecting both workers and customers. Chief of Staff Clark Mercer clarified that the Virginia Dept. of Health will target those businesses that are “grossly negligent” in requiring masks and will consist of a warning first followed by court intervention leading suspension of operating license if necessary.

Charlotte County's temporary operational changes, outlined in the documents below and designed to protect public health and encourage social distancing are also still in place.  Those visiting County offices are asked to abide by these procedures to protect the health of themselves, County employees and others.

Due to continuing concerns regarding COVID-19, citizens are still encouraged to contact County staff by telephone, e-mail or fax during normal business hours whenever possible to conduct necessary business.
